The rare peregrine falcons, which have nested downtown since 2003, disappeared in late March. A state biologist spotted individual falcons downtown last week, and two scientists saw the pair perching and mating Tuesday on the BB&T building at 823 E. Main St.
Sergio Harding, a bird biologist with the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, believes the falcons disappeared to nest in a secret spot.
"That nest may have failed for some reason -- rain could have washed it out, for example. Now it appears the birds are preparing to nest again", Harding said.
